I’m back + designer elena gallen

took a long break to be with family for a while and to clear my head. it’s been a long, tiring month. I’m excited to be home and back to bumblesea. I’ve got some old finished DIY projects that still need to be posted. one of them will probably change your life, just saying.

I want to buy all of elena gallen’s goods. her likes: high heels, area 51, and terry richardson. of course.

best DIY find ever: luxenoir’s DIY sharpie chanel logo shirt – with holes eating up the fabric on bottom of the tshirt. perfect. this girl is cute as hell too.

unfortunately, from experience, I know that sharpie on fabric gets messy and smudges everywhere after you wash it. and I’m not sure about my willingness to sport the chanel logo. but it’s inspiring enough to make me break out my black water based acrylic paints and play with some of my old clothes. this is how bumblesea started, after all. though I’ll never sell handmade shirts again, there’s no reason why I can’t make a few of my own.

I took a few days to figure out what I’d like to start focusing on with the bumblesea blog. my decision: more fashion designers, accessories, fashion photography, and DIY projects of course. in keeping with my new theme here are two of my favorite flickr photos! a girly and simple lace and linen tote by cottonblue, aka wan, a japanese fabric addict. and a photograph entitled “away” by the very talented and very young olivia bee.

nick knight, the reason I got into photography

I can’t blame it all on nick knight. there’s guy bourdin and juergen teller (whom nick mentored) as well. I got a subscription to W magazine in highschool and these three men gave me something to daydream about in chemistry class: fashion photography. (mr. miller, there was a perfectly good reason for me to write “no” as my answer to the question “find the molarity of this solution” on our chemistry final.)

I can safely say that I’m not jealous of the models that have to work with him, though. they’re constantly jumping, dancing, being thrown around like dolls (I wonder if any of them have been injured?) but they’re being tortured for a good cause, in my opinion.

pink sea salt + new bumblesea interview

my mother can rarely change my mind about anything, but the last time I visited my family she convinced me to get some sea salt while grocery shopping with her. in her effort to convince me that I needed more than morton salt in my pantry she went into detail about the health benefits of sea salt and it’s superior taste to table salt. I was only convinced to get the salt grinder when I looked closely at the clear bottle and noticed that the course salt grains looked like tiny quartz crystals. the sad truth is that I am a very shallow person, even when it comes to decisions about salt. the salt was cute, so I got it.

I have some doubts about how healthy sea salt is in comparison to table salt, but it tastes all kinds of delicious. this has resulted in me running out of the stuff only a few weeks after purchasing it (shut up, I cook a lot.) I need more of the crack salt so I turn to google, which opened my eyes to the wonderful world of HIMALAYAN PINK SEA SALT?! this stuff looks so amazing it should not be edible.

in addition to pink sea salt, google also introduced me to an amazing blog called stuff white people like. stuff white people like #119:  sea salt. thanks mom, for making me even more white than I already am.

here you go stalkers, the newest bumblesea interview on aspiring couture. if you don’t feel like reading the whole thing, here are some highlights for you.

“The design for my next jewelry tag has the words ‘You can’t take this where you’re going’ on the back.”

“My boyfriend constantly asks me what I’m writing down, I yell ‘IDEAS!’ and continue violently scribbling my chicken scratch down. I wake up with ink on my face and sheets from me writing on my arms in bed the night before. There are sixteen to do lists on my desk right now. I’m never bored, my brain works faster than my body can keep up with.”

“Only take business advice from people who are successful in your industry. Seek these people out and form meaningful, long term relationships with them, everything else should turn into white noise. On the other hand, try to keep your head out of your ass. Let me know how it works out for you. Seriously, email me.”

heartbreaker by metronomy

metronomy is one of those bands that had to take time to grow on me. some of their songs are hit or miss but heartbreaker is one of my favorites. I fell in love with it last august, after being forced to listen to an entire metronomy album. this song will probably always remind me of walking home at 1 AM in the pouring rain, having to crash with friends for a month until the lease I snatched up for this killer apartment would finally be mine. sounds kinda depressing, but it was actually one of the best summers I’ve ever had.

fast forward to this august, I’m happily settled into my apartment, stumbling upon the video for heartbreaker on youtube. any video that features a car with curtains and a bird cage in the back seat is worthy of a blog post on bumblesea.

olga ert aka inkpanda flowery sculptures via flickr

oh, I’ve been slacking on the blog… well.

I like olga ert’s sculptures of little creatures covered in flowers. I think she’s primarily an illustrator and most of her work is done under the name “inkpanda”, you can check out her work on behance, blogspot, and flickr. I believe she’s japanese, but lives in russia and speaks russian on all her online profiles. obviously I can’t read anything that she writes so that’s about the extend of my knowledge of her work. but hey, it’s pretty, right? that’s all I need to know.

bumblesea etsy wishlist

etsy wishlist, heyooo. I will probably never get these things, if I bought everything on etsy I loved I would be in massive amounts of debt. I have all my jewelry tucked away in little drawers on my work desk, I could probably buy three of these cactus jewelry displays and still not have enough room to hang necklaces on. and almost everyone knows one of my favorite posessions is a huge gold bust of beethoven, lovingly dubbed “beets.” and why the hell can’t I manage to grow my own terrarium? isn’t it supposed to be easy to do? photos courtesy of sara schalliol and made by mavis, click on the photos to view their etsy shops!

bumblesea art prints?

I’m pretty handy with photoshop, I’ve been interested in hyperrealism for a few years now. I’m toying around with the idea of selling some prints of hyperrealistic digital paintings/illustrations. all the tests projects I’ve done have been paintings of original photographs so this could be a way for me to get more involved in photography again.

I’ve been pretty busy keeping up with bumblesea and working on bigger projects so this art print idea is reserved for me to work on in the wee hours of the morning when I find it impossible to fall asleep. I’m currently working on an illustration of the hatched necklace (the egg only- I’d go crazy trying to paint the chain), and it’s about half way done. the photoshop file size is already up to nearly 2 gigs. luckily I have a few extra hard drives laying around that can be dedicated to holding all the original files.

right now I’m focusing on launching the much anticipated (and more affordable!) acrylic line. (I know I’ve been promising the new line forever..) the jewelry studio will be able to cruise on autopilot once it’s launched. I’ll still be on twitter and of course I’ll still update the blog- but it’ll give me more time to spend with friends and family.
