salt crystals, putting them in front of your camera

I should probably stop making unicorns references on my blog titles. I should probably do lots of other things, too.

I got the sudden urge to go gem mining, something I’ve never done before. alas, central illinois isn’t the best place to do so. the closest decent mines I’ve found online are in hot springs, arkansas. an eight mile drive from here. so until I find something closer to home I think jordan and I are going to attempt making some salt crystals. oh the life I lead.

ps: buy some jewelry/feature it on your blog? speaking of blogs, grace bonney replied to an email I sent her and I geeked out. screw edward cullen, I want some posters of my favorite bloggers all over my bedroom walls.

uh huh

everything’s somewhat back to normal. now I have this awfully long to do list glaring at me from my desk. I took a nap to avoid him but he’s still there.

bumblesea has been featured on a few blogs over the past week or so. I’m trying to compile a list so I can share all the features on my blog. my poor press page has been somewhat abandoned. why hello there, to do list.

just one of those days, I guess.

forced vacation

our apartment is located on part of the power grid that’s being overloaded due to the heat and everyone using air conditioning. there’s nothing quite like having the power shut off four times over the course of trying to write a simple email. poor jean probably doesn’t know what to do with herself without me cluttering up her inbox.

we’ve been spending the majority of our days at jordan’s parents’ house (they’re out of town) swimming in the pool, watching bad tv, and making s’mores. it’s nice to have a break but I hate falling behind on my work.

maureen gubia, I’m still obsessed with you

I wonder how much a commissioned watercolor by her would be. “OKAY MAUREEN, YOU READY? a 15 year old girl in stilettos climing over a barbed wire fence while holding an ice cream cone that’s melting everywhere.”

she’s in an art swap group on flickr but it’s invitation only. I call bullshit, maureen. someone invite me so she gets stuck with my jewelry and I get one of these.

Sexy, Sleek, Smooth

I don’t even know how I became extremely attracted to modern, avant-garde, minimalist furniture and architecture, but I definitely am addicted at this point. I’d better find a way to make that cash money fast because I refuse to live in anything else. Check out how Hudson Furniture fulfills all of my modern dreams:

This is the Hudson Trunk Base table with a plexi glass top. It reminds me of this awesome low coffee table my grandmother used to have in her rather stately house. What a way to incorporate the awesome beauty of nature within the walls of your house. Every night would be a dinner party at my place if I owned this table.

I’m not an outdoorsy person by any means, but how could you not be in awe of nature’s regal qualities shown in these Hudson pieces?

DIY lampshade

DIY lampshade

DIY lampshade

I have this awful habit of buying great vintage lamp bases and putting them in a closet because I can’t find any decent lampshades. I needed a quick project to work on with jean and I was looking at a few DIY projects about heating/shrinking plastic bags to make various objects. most of the items happen to be bags for some reason. I have too many purses already, and I’m not going to add to the collection unless it’s another ultra soft leather handbag. I knew I wanted to try melting some plastic bags and I also need some lampshades, you’ve got chocolate on my peanut butter, etc.

all you need for this project is plastic bags (use colorful bags if you want to avoid a dull greyish result), wax paper, something to fasten the lampshade together (glue, staples, or thread) and an iron. I live in squalor and don’t own an iron so I used a hot pan. having an iron will give you an advantage, many f-bombs were dropped during the reheating of my pan, jean can attest for this.

put wax paper down on a hard surface that can stand some considerable heat, layer a few plastic bags on top, and cover with another sheet of wax paper. according to this instructable you need to heat the bags up to about 110°F or 7/10 on their iron setting. the result is a thin but sturdy sheet of plastic. I burnt my bags so there are holes in the resulting plastic, but jean tried to make me feel better by telling me that a lampshade with some holes in it would be pretty sweet. turns out she’s right.

the lamp I decided to use for this project is quite small so I was able to simply staple the plastic together to form a cylander. the resulting lampshade was a bit bland so I glued a layer of pink lace over it. you could even hang some crystals from the bottom if you’d like, but I think I’m happy with my lamp shade just as it is.

This is why

I love that I stuck with my journalism major. Today, went over to Jennifer’s place to observe her doing a DIY lampshade made out of plastic shopping bags. I can’t really describe what it was, but I’ve interviewed different local artists before and I could definitely get the sense that she really loves what she does. It’s really refreshing to see someone’s true fervor for what she wants to do with her life.

press release and flickr favs

jean whipped up a fantastic press release for the relaunch and new jewelry line. now I get the wonderful task of submitting it to publications and PR directories. yay?

most of my flickr favorites are either photos of strange little plants, ice caves, or sulking teenage girls. behold, some plants and stuff:

inspiration board

I have so many papers/drawings/cutouts that I’ve collected over the years that I’m planning on covering the largest wall in my apartment with them to make one massive inspiration board. my apartment is very unusual and has cathedral ceilings, so the wall is about 12-15 feet high at its tallest point. I think I might actually run out of papers before I finish covering the wall, but I’ll take some before and after pictures anyway.
